Our Story


Alivion, founded in 2020 as a spin-off from ETH Zurich, combines scientific excellence with everyday practicality. Our Alivion SmartSelect™ technology, developed over 15 years at ETH, enables precise, real-time substance analysis anywhere.


Our portable monitoring solutions serve key sectors such as health, nutrition, and environmental safety. By measuring breath biomarkers, we empower individuals to follow healthier lifestyles and gain a deeper understanding of their nutritional needs – for improved well-being and higher quality of life.

Board Chair

Dr. med. Kay Brunner is a medical doctor and former senior executive at Roche and Abbott. With over 25 years of leadership experience, he supports start-ups and investors in go-to-market, due diligence, and medical-to-commercial scaling.

Dr. René Lenggenhager

Board

Dr. René Lenggenhager is an experienced CEO and board member with a strong track record in life sciences and high-tech industries. He supports companies in venture growth, commercial scaling, and transforming innovation into customer-centric businesses.

Dr. med. dent. Erich Müller

Board

Dr. med. dent. Erich Müller is a private angel investor and dentist. He has supported Alivion since its early days, contributing long-term commitment and personal conviction.

CEO

With over 25 years of experience in sales, marketing, and executive leadership in the Life Science and MedTech industries, Woody Schoch is driving Alivion’s international expansion and the development of innovative HealthTech solutions with a strong customer focus.

Dr. Jan van den Broek

CTO

Jan van den Broek combines expertise in nanotechnology and engineering with over 7 year experience in sensor development and scale-up. He earned his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from ETH Zurich and was awardedthe ETH Silver Medal for his outstanding thesis.

Giorgio Di Loro

Product Engineer

Giorgio Di Loro has experience in electronics design and development, including hardware, PCB design, firmware, and software. His research background in sensors and measurement instruments bridges the gap between electronics and sensing technologies.

Tobias Gruber

Hardware Engineering

Tobias Gruber is a mechanical engineer specializing in hardware development, sensor technology, and filtration systems. At Alivion, he leads the development of robust and precise sensor systems.

Jerzy Piechowiak

Product Validation

As a Master’s student in Biomedical Engineering at ETH Zurich, Jerzy Piechowiak works on product validation, data analysis, and systematic sensor testing at Alivion.
